On June 16th, 2011, The United Nations Human Rights Council endorsed the Guiding Principles for Business and Human Rights (Guiding Principles). The Guiding Principles outline how states and businesses should implement the three pillars set out in the “Protect, Respect and Remedy” Framework.
Although the Principles are not legally binding, they are increasingly shaping people’s expectations about the way businesses should respect human rights. Also, the Principles provide excellent guidance for companies to reduce human rights risks. Companies that are familiar with them and incorporate them in their policies and practices will have another tool with which to manage risk related to human rights.
